The Best Low Carb Chocolate for Keto, Atkins, and Diabetic Diets
There are a ton of sugar-free low carb chocolate options out there and picking your first low carb chocolate to try can be difficult and disappointing. At the time of writing this post I’ve been on the ketogenic diet (very low carb) for over four years and tried my fair share of low carb chocolate.
In this post, I’ll share with you what I look for in a good low carb chocolate and the best low carb chocolate brand I’ve found over the years.
When looking for a ketogenic friendly chocolate there are two primary factors: sweeteners and hidden carbohydrates. You want very low glycemic index sweeteners and no ingredients that will raise your blood sugar or raise insulin besides a bit of cocoa.
You can certainly go for 100% cocoa chocolate bars if you’ve got the balls and don’t mind a bitter kick in the mouth but I prefer a more subtle and sweet variety.
Ketogenic Friendly Sweeteners:
Erythritol (Lowest glycemic index sugar alcohol.)
Inulin (Chicory Root Fiber) (Low glycemic index fiber sweetener.)
Monk Fruit (Luo Han Guo) (Zero glycemic index sweetener.)
Stevia (Zero glycemic index sweetener, can have a bitter or unpleasant aftertaste if you have certain taste receptors.)

Red Flag Ingredients to Avoid:
Sugar (Check nutrition facts, there should be 0g sugar under Total Carbohydrates)
Maltitol, Xylitol, Lactitol, and Sorbitol (These sugar alcohols have a higher glycemic index than I would like, I stick with Erythritol.)
Dextrin, Dextrose, Maltodextrin, Polydextrose (Carbohydrates in disguise)
Corn, Oat, Rice, and Tapioca Fiber (They’re putting these in low carb products left and right, and I suspect that they raise blood sugar or insulin. They leave me with cravings and hunger.)
My Favorite Brand of Ketogenic Friendly Chocolate
ChocoPerfection blew me away the first time I tried it, the taste and texture were so much better than any other low carb chocolate I’d tried before. I thought it might be too good to be true so I tested my blood ketones one day then ate four bars of it, at the same time the next day my blood ketone reading was even higher than the previous day, I was sold.
I give ChocoPerfection a A ketogenic compatibility grade because of it’s low net carbs (2g per 50g bar), high fat, low protein, zero glycemic index sweeteners, and no mystery “fiber”. The only two downsides of ChocoPerfection are that it is expensive and if you really pig out you’ll most likely become the eye of a fart storm (a side effect of Erythritol and Inulin), both are prices I’m usually willing to pay.
They have a lot of great flavors too, dark and dark mint are my favorites and Raspberry is the only flavor I don’t like. The dark mint with a handful of macadamia nuts tastes just like thin mint cookies. You get the classic mint chocolate flavor with the salty and crunchy macadamia nuts, it’s my favorite ultra low carb dessert.
